tip 1 De vallei van Katharo Het complete achterland van de dorpen Kroustas en Kritsa is tot Natura 2000 gebied verklaard. Je kunt daar prachtig wandelen en je komt er niemand tegen. In de bergen regeren de lammergier en de vale gier. In groepen cirkelen ze nieuwsgierig boven je. Vooral de vallei van Katharo is iets speciaals. Tot april zijn de bergtoppen daar wit en stromen er beekjes. Je bereikt de vallei binnen 30 minuten stijgend over een asfaltweg tip 2Een geheim gehouden ruïne. Als een kind ongedoopt sterft was er in de Middeleeuwen een probleem. Het kind mag dan niet in een kerk begraven worden. Op West-Kreta werd het lijkje dan in een grot gelegd en daarmee 'teruggegeven' aan de aarde. Op Oost-Kreta (bij ons dus) had men een andere oplossing. Het is moeilijk te vinden en te bereiken, maar we geven je graag adviezen.   tip 3El Greco is een Kretenzer! In talloze kerkjes op Oost-Kreta vind je Byzantijnse kunst in de vorm van fresco's. Ze dateren meestal uit de 13e en 14e eeuw. De bekendste kerk is de Panagia Kera in Kritsa. Dat is een cultuurhistorisch hoogtepunt maar daarmee ook een toeristentrekker.Wij kunnen je wijzen op een uniek kerkje met fraaie fresco's ergens in de bergen. De deur is altijd open. Wist je trouwens dat El Greco op Kreta is geboren en hier zijn schilderkunst leerde. Je ziet het kleugebruik en de stilerring nog steeds terug in zijn beroemde werken. El Greco heet in werkelijkheid Theotokopoulos, Maar werd dus 'de Griek' genoemd in Spanje.   tip 4Er staan 250 Minoïsche boerderijen in onze achtertuin. Archeologe Sabina Beckman heeft in de bergen boven Kroustas meer dan 250 plekken ontdekt waar 4.000 jaar geleden boerderijen stonden. Ze dateren uit de zogenaamde Midden Brons Periode van de Minoïsche beschaving. Het is er prachtig wandelen. We vertellen je graag waar je de ingang kunt vinden van het Historical landscape park Kroustas.   tip 5De stad Lato Nooit van gehoord? Toch was Lato ooit een belangrijke stad op Kreta. Het is een stad die 500 jaar voor Christus werd gebouwd door de Doriërs. Je weet wel, van Alexander de Grote.Lato is een echte ‘polis’, een oud-Griekse stad. Compleet met agora, stadhuis, huizen, ateliers, een openluchttheater en een tempel. De tempel is van de godin Elithieia, Zij kon het baren bemoeilijken en vergemakkelijken... tip 6Een wonder in een klooster Een herder merkte dat één van zijn geiten steeds een andere route nam en van de kudde afweek. Op een dag volgde hij de geit uit nieuwsgierigheid. Het bleek dat de geit een grot had gevonden waar water aanwezig was. Bij het verlaten van de grot zag hij in zijn ooghoeken een icoon van Maria hangen. Totaal verbluft nam hij de icoon mee naar zijn hut en hing hem daar aan de muur. Maar de volgende ochtend was de icoon verdwenen en bleek terug 'gegaan' te zijn naar de grot. Dit ritueel herhaalde zich diverse keren. Dat was dus een wonder...Over de grot is later een kerk gebouwd en voor de kerk een klooster. Op de 15e augustus is het een druk bezocht bedevaartsoord. Op alle andere dagen ben je er welkom om een stlite naar de icoon in de grot te kijken. Klooster Faneromenis (wat verschijning betekent) is een half uur rijden vanaaf Villa Dio Petres.   tip 7'Ons' Kroustas Wij houden van Kroustas. Je moet het zelf ondervinden hoe je hier uit de tijd kunt stappen.     tip 8Kritsa Kritsa is een levendig dorp met toeristen tussen 11.00 en 17.00 uur. Daarbuiten is het weer zichzelf. Je kunt er heerlijk flaneren, borrelen en prima eten.Kritsa ligt op 4 kilometer afstand van Villa Dio Petres.    
  Oost-Kreta is een wandelparadijs. In elk seizoen. Maar er zijn maar weinig bewegwijzerde paden te vinden. Alle seizoenen hebben hun aantrekkelijkheden. Ook in de zomer kun je goed wandelen omdat de temperatuur in de hogere bergen een stuk lager ligt. Wij hebben onze eigen prachtige routes voor je als je bij ons bent. Voor 2024 hebben we zelf digitaal wandelroutes voor je vastgelegd die je in Google Maps kunt openen en nalopen. Korte eenvoudige routes, middelzware van circa 2 uur en bergroutes van 3 à 4 uur. Direct vanuit Villa Dio Petres. Of op andere mooie plekken in onze provincie Lasithi (dan heb je wel een huurauto nodig). We geven je die routes graag als je bij ons verblijft.

A very wide range of vegetarian dishes, as also common on Crete, is possible.
